How Multistage Adaptive Testing (MST) Works
Unlike traditional fixed-form tests where all students receive identical questions, the Digital SAT dynamically personalizes question difficulty based on your real-time performance:
1. Module 1: Routing Module
Every test-taker answers an identical mix of easy, medium, and difficult questions in Module 1 to establish baseline proficiency.
2. The Split: Easy vs. Hard Tier
High performers on Module 1 are routed to the Hard Module 2, unlocking scoring potential up to 800. Scoring lower routes to the Easy Module 2 (capped at ~590–620).
3. Precision Scoring (IRT)
Scoring uses Item Response Theory (IRT). Your score reflects not merely raw correct answers, but the statistical difficulty weight of questions mastered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the SATGenius practice tests completely free?
Yes. SATGenius is a free educational platform designed to provide accessible, high-quality test preparation to high school students worldwide. You can take practice tests, drill weaknesses, and review detailed answer explanations at zero cost.
Can I use the Desmos calculator on the entire Digital SAT Math section?
Yes! On the Digital SAT, the built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available on 100% of math questions across both Module 1 and Module 2. Learning how to leverage regression and equation graphing in Desmos is one of the highest-yield strategies to raise your score.
What score do I need on Module 1 to unlock the harder Module 2?
While College Board does not publish exact proprietary cutoffs, empirical data indicates that scoring approximately 65% to 70% or higher on Module 1 (~18+ correct out of 27 on RW, and ~15+ correct out of 22 on Math) routes students to the harder Module 2.
How frequently should I take full-length practice tests?
We recommend taking one diagnostic test at the start of your preparation to identify baseline weaknesses, followed by targeted drills during weeks 2 and 3. In the final two weeks leading up to exam day, take one full-length timed test per week to build test-day stamina.
